The partnership has engaged wctd to carry out a number of projects and assist with events in the Ascot and Maidenhead area.  Some of the work could be termed sports development work, whilst other projects are far more innovative.

Olympic inspiration and Legacy programme

wctd were engaged as consultants in 2012 and 2013 to identify funding and sponsorship plus project manage the exciting programme of activities for schools in the Ascot and Maidenhead  School Sports Partnership.

wctd assisted the Partnership Development Manager with a Partnership Torch relay which travelled around each school before finishing at Bisham Abbey the day before the Olympic Torch visited. We also arranged for Olympians Gail Emms (Badminton) and Hannah Macleod (Hockey) to do a number of inspirational talks and practical sessions to schools in the Partnership.

wctd accessed Get Set funding from the Government to deliver an Olympic Conference, inspirational sessions and leadership training in the lead up to London 2012 and recently legacy money to continue inspiring young people using the Olympic Games.

wctd will be supporting the Partnership in Commonwealth Games inspiration events in the run up to Glasgow 2014.

Coach Accreditation Scheme

The partnership were concerned that teachers rarely had the time and sometimes the understanding of how to engage sports coaches for curricular and extra-curricular sporting activity and engaged wctd to manage a process that would improve this position.

Understanding the sporting landscape was vital in identifying the important elements of any scheme that would provide schools with safe, knowledgeable and enthusiastic coaches. We recommended a licensing scheme that would allow coaches and coaching organisations to apply for status on the scheme following rigorous checks on their suitability.

The scheme ensures that all coaches included in the database have the following:

  • A recognised National Governing Body (NGB) level 2 qualification
  • Face-to-face safeguarding training recognised by the NGB *
  • A recognised first aid course
  • A current Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS, replacing CRB) check
  • £5m professional liability cover

* As some coaches have attended safeguarding training face-to-face many times, a number of NGBs are providing online refresher courses. Only coaches that have attended courses that are approved by NGBs qualify for the database.

The scheme is now operating in the area and schools receive a bulletin from wctd and the partnership with a list of coaches that meet the criteria. It is hoped that schools will look for coaches using the database and make sport safer and better quality in their schools.

sports coach UK have shown an interest in using the scheme as an example of good practice and are currently examining the terms and conditions drawn up by wctd.
